The Crystal Castles of Memory: A Generative Poetry Workshop
A new generative poetry workshop taught by Mindy Nettifee for the Georgia Writers Association. From the perspective of neuroscience, memory is not a system designed to create accurate representations of the past; it’s designed for learning. We are therefore overwriting and changing memories all the time, and autobiographical memory may become boldly fictionalized while still retaining a feeling of emotional truth. Trauma may also compromise our creation of memories, leaving fragments of our experience stored but, in a sense, floating in a forever present. This workshop will explore somatic and poetic modes of accessing and engaging different types of memory – both explicit and implicit memory – for the purpose of giving fresh language to what’s happened, what’s happening now, and the lived experience of being cumulative.
