Wednesday at 11:49am PST, the new moon solar eclip Wednesday at 11:49am PST, the new moon solar eclipse arrives at at 10° of Libra. This eclipse is the third and last in a series of south node eclipses in Libra, the cosmic archetype of Beauty, Balance, Truth, and Justice—what we most need to create harmonious relationships. The south node’s job is to relieve us of patterns and attachments that are getting in the way of our soul’s growth. In Libra, it’s been targeting the submissive, avoidant, disempowering ways we show up in relationships, especially any maladaptive ways we go about receiving love—the people-pleasing, the over-giving, the soft or non-existent limits and boundaries. It’s been arranging situations that push us to more actively define ourselves, to develop and use our personal power, to advocate for own needs, and risk being more honest and maybe a little messy, even if it causes conflict. We are in the deep end of this transit, so you likely know by now what this transit is up to for you personally. This last few days may have shone a bright light on it, as Mercury transited Libra and connected with both the south node and the Sun. You may have received a revelation or rude awakening. Or your attention was drawn to a situation or dynamic you’ve been aware of for a long time, but weren’t sure how to address. Now you are getting clear on the fact that, whether you name it or not, whether you face it or not, it’s standing in the way of progress. It’s like a crack in your foundation—it needs to be addressed and healed, or you need to be willing to move on. There is a better version of your life that can’t happen until you do. Change is so hard! But know that any honest efforts to address this work now and in the coming six months will be supported. If you feel uneasy, it’s because new energies—the energies of the growth to come—have already appeared. They are dialing in a change that your soul needs. While it is initially disruptive, you can trust this new awareness being ignited in your spirit. Write down any realizations. Summon your bravery and boldness and fuck it. Commit to doing the work. You don’t have to understand it all, or see the future clearly, to take the leap of faith in yourself.
At 7:34pm PST on Tuesday evening, September 17th, At 7:34pm PST on Tuesday evening, September 17th, just after the sun sets on the West coast, the full moon will pass in to the shadow of the earth, creating a partial lunar eclipse at 25° of Pisces. It’s a north node eclipse—the node of initiation and increase. And so we will end the season of summer, not with a full moon, not with an energetic wave rising and crashing and giving us a clear and satisfying finish, but with a mysterious, nebulous beginning. Pisces is an archetype of nonduality and paradox. It’s represented by the cosmic twin fish, swimming away from each other but also forever tied together in the great ocean of oneness. It’s the final sign of the Zodiac, the mutable water of endings/beginnings, and takes us into a realm beyond the literal and physical—or the one before it, the source that gives rise to it. This is the territory we can only sense with our hearts and imaginations, the realm of unmanifest ideas and spirits, vibes and inklings, desires and dreams. We navigate it by being very very sensitive, by feeling our way around, by sensing the flow of tides and energies and flowing with them. Pisces is sacred ground for poets and mediums and Jungians and horse whisperers—for really anyone who knows how to walk through a forest of symbols and subtle transmissions and not get lost. And to everyone else, it might not feel like ground at all. A lunar eclipse here has got to be one of the most unsteady lunations possible. So if you’ve been feeling particularly lost or ungrounded or emotional this last week, that’s right on time. Take care of yourself and your people as best you can. Apply compassion liberally. This is a wild way to transition into fall and the season of soul and depth and failing and feeling. Something bigger than us is opening and happening, and it has to do with one of our most beautiful dreams, and how we will commit to the steady daily work of bringing that dream into reality. When the big wheel is spinning like this, and fate-like forces are at work, it’s ok to just sit down for a while, and stop wielding our personal will. Find some stillness if you can. Practice what is sometimes the hardest thing - trusting in a process.
Monday evening at 6:55pm PT, the moon goes dark an Monday evening at 6:55pm PT, the moon goes dark and renews herself at 11° of Virgo, high priestess of exactness and intelligent earth. The Virgo new moon is the last one of summer in the north. After the emo neediness of Cancer, and the messy fever dream of Leo, Virgo arrives and this calm, cool, collected boss. It combines the healing, regenerative powers of mutable earth with its leader Mercury’s brilliant mind. It’s energy is essentially analyzing, organizing, and refining. It’s the part of us that knows how to bring order to chaos and complexity; how to mine and apply insights in just the right way to steady what’s flourishing and help what isn’t. This year we rolled into Virgo season mid-Mercury-retrograde, so we’ve had to wait for this moment of clarity. Mercury stationed direct last week, and after a few days, I could feel it — the Virgo in me finally lighting up, focusing its attention, orienting around, slightly horrified, slightly delighted at how undone I’ve been, and how much there is to do. You may be feeling your own version of this. Now that the Virgo new moon is here, a new current of manifestation is ready to begin. Fresh limits and fresh forms and fresh ways of going about it all. We have changed in the last six month, in ways we know about, and in ways we are still realizing. A deep reset is needed and possible. Virgo wants us to remember this: real magic is possible when we dedicate ourselves not to manifesting a particular goal or outcome, but to manifesting a harmonious process. It might have something to do with approaching work as play, creativity as a serious responsibility, limitations as perfect opportunities. Every year I learn more about what that means for me personally, which leads to less unnecessary struggling. When a process is rigorous enough, and beautiful enough; when it nourishes you and applies you in equal measure; it really doesn’t matter where you end up—you’re going to want to be there. On this new moon, I hope you get dosed with some of this wise, holy-process-loving Virgo spirit. May it flow into all the places in your life that need of tending and repair. Monday, at 11:25am PT, the moon is bright and full Monday, at 11:25am PT, the moon is bright and full at 27° of Aquarius, the cosmic water bearer. In spite of its symbol, Aquarius is not a water sign, it is fixed air, the sign of deep winter in the northern hemisphere. Its archetypal territory is the vessel of the mind, the vessel of conscious awareness, through which all phenomenon flows. Its full moon peaks during Leo sun season, as Aquarius holds the opposite pole of Leo. If Leo is all body, all heart, all closeness and heat, Aquarius is all intellect and imagination, all disembodied spirit and sparkling inner vision, all cool and reflective and distant. It’s the part of the Self that can journey the farthest metaphysically, that can reach an outer world only accessible by going through the inner doors. This full moon is arriving in the heart of some of the most challenging astrology of the year, apart from the eclipses. Mercury is retrograde, and Pluto, too, still sitting on that 0° of Aquarius. We’ve just had an explosive Jupiter Mars conjunction in Gemini, and they both in turn are squaring Saturn in Pisces, which is like all that wants to expand and act in us meeting hard limits and contractions. And then today the full moon is making an exact square to Uranus in Taurus. It’s all very disruptive and messy and activating. Not necessarily bad or good; perfect for breakthroughs and breakdowns. Depending on your current state of well-being, these conditions could be very rough. This gift this Aquarius full moon is offering us is some kind of new perspective, a sudden ability to widen our lens dramatically to include more potential expression, more self-facets, more collectivity, more wholeness. We get to be larger, our definitions get to be larger. I sense this perspective expansion is the secret fuel to you being even more of yourself, and to me being even more of myself. Trust what arrives. Capture it in some way you know how to hold something sacred. Let it instruct you in what is ending now, and what is beginning. My sweet mom Lynne died in the early hours of Frid My sweet mom Lynne died in the early hours of Friday, at home in California, surrounded by love. My heart is broken. She was a real lion my mom, fierce and joyful, giant-hearted, sun-hearted, courageous care and delight just roaring out her. She never missed a chance to risk loving too much. It’s fitting that she joined the ancestors as the Leo new moon waxed, after the sun had set on a hot summer day. I already miss her face and her voice and her laugh terribly. But she lived a hard good life, and she deserves peace and freedom now. If you pray, you can join me in praying for her liberation, and the liberation of all souls. If you think good thoughts, think some especially kind ones for her and everyone who loves her.
In the early hours of Sunday morning at 4:12am PST In the early hours of Sunday morning at 4:12am PST, the moon goes dark and renews her entire celestial being at 12° of Leo, the cosmic fire cat. Leo is the sign the Sun is most at home in, it’s like this regal gorgeous lion and its best friend the sun are just relaxing and radiant, making power and self-love and self-mastery look easy. So Leo celebrates the solar Self, the inner fire, and how each of us is a center of the universe. Its teachings are about authentic self-expression, and the development and offering of our unique gifts. Wherever Leo leads in your chart, it is considered a direct line to something essential and irrepressible about you, some way you were born to shine. That’s where this new moon new beginning is happening. The degree it’s happening at, 12° of Leo, is specifically vibrating with a kind of contemplative, integrative energy. This could be an ideal time to pause and process your personal journey, updating your personal story in some important way. Maybe there’s some way you are re-membering who you really are, like post a lot of shadow work. Consider this a call to integrate your healing and evolution, as a way of anchoring your growth and getting readier and more solid before you proceed. By mid-August, the astrology will be very rocky, and this moon wants to help us prepare. I don’t know what kind of weekend or coming week you have in store for you, if there will be any space for intentional contracting and reflection and inner work. But that’s the invitation. Just remember, Leo is not really about mental work or expansion—that’s Aquarius territory. Leo is about the heart and the body and the spirit. So full permission to move away from reflection as an intellectual exercise, and towards reflection as an embodiment of awareness and aliveness. Reflection as this lived experience of being your multi-dimensional diamond Self. Don’t think about who you are now, and what you have been through, and who you are becoming: feel it. Be it. Sink/sync into it more. Enact it. Beam it out. You are on the precipice of coming into some new dimension of yourself and your own power, and we all can’t wait to see it.
Early Sunday morning, at 3:16am PST, the moon peak Early Sunday morning, at 3:16am PST, the moon peaks in fullness again in Capricorn, cosmic saint of maximum adulthood, holy sea goat conqueror of all life’s most precarious heights and breadths and depths. The last one happened the day after the Solstice, at 1° of Capricorn, and a lot has happened since then. This second Capricorn full moon is at 29°, the anaretic degree or breaking point/ending degree, in a near-exact conjunction with Pluto at 0° of Aquarius. These energies are constellating a Plutonic dark night of the soul, or a passage through the abyss, and at this moment, there’s just no denying the difficult and uncomfortable trial of transformation that this year is. It’s a lot of uncertainty to hold, and a lot of work to show up for. In Capricorn, there’s a kind of grim determination to meet our responsibilities, especially to collective survival structures. We may be more aware than usual of the consequences of not doing so, and, we might have more stamina than usual because of it. But also we might be waiting until we are completely depleted to rest, at which point we are in a full spiritual crisis, and not just physical burnout. That’s not great, that’s not what we’re going for. These serious, studious, guardian moons in Capricorn are trying to give us the exact medicine we need. They are repeatedly constellating this deep, subterranean earth, this ambitious mountainous earth, to ground all this fire and freak out and violence and change. They are initiating us into the spiritual mystery of Capricorn’s profound selflessness, so that we can continue to show up steadily, joyfully, and reverently; so that we don’t miss this opportunity to accomplish something big for ourselves, each other, and future generations. Use this full moon to do an honest inventory of where you are at, how your energy and spirit are faring. Acknowledge how far you’ve come. Call in any healing or support needed. Cast spells to protect yourself and others from the kind of defeatism, dread, and despair that will keep us from fully participating and cocreating what comes next. Their are new energies coming we will need to harness for our own course of empowerment. Get ready.
Friday, July 5th at 3:57pm PST, the moon goes dark Friday, July 5th at 3:57pm PST, the moon goes dark and renews herself at 14° of Cancer, archetype of the Great Water Mother. You may have been feeling the call of this moon all week, in the form of an especially tender heart, or the flaring up of distressing symptoms. It’s time to pause, reorient, and check in with our bodies; absorb any changes in situation and the arising needs we have because of them; notice what’s in need of care or repair. Cancer’s energy is intuitive, nurturing, and loving, and she wants to help us rest and recenter. She wants us to remember especially how to tend our creative lifeforce, so that we can sustain the long loving effort of bringing new forms into fully realized being. This new moon is arriving between two Capricorn full moons, and in the midst of a larger quality of time that is fiery and not so much about resting, but about the massive work in front of us. So let’s all really breathe this one in if we can. Cancer is the Moon’s domicile. It’s the sign where she feels most at home, takes luxurious sighs, and has access to all her moon powers. Together they are the yin to the Sun’s yang. They teach us the way of receptivity, of stilling and sensing, of feeling our way through the dark. They want us to focus on being and being with rather than doing. All of our efforts will be for nothing if we are making them from a place of unconscious reactivity. In fact, taking action for action’s sake may make things much worse, intensify suffering, and prolong processes of resolution. Cancer and the Moon aren’t teaching us to be passive; rather there are times when the most effective response is an active surrender, a relinquishing of attempts to control, a pausing and syncing in to listen and wait. In that place, the rational fearful mind, consumed with what it thinks it knows, can start to quiet. We can contact and feel, instead, the wisdom of the whole. Eventually, and right on time, knowledge of the next right action for us to take will emerge. Consider using this moon to radically tune in and sense what’s needed now. Call in the inner resources you will need, that we all will need, to make it through the second half of this year.
June 20th is the Summer Solstice, the peak of the June 20th is the Summer Solstice, the peak of the light and the longest day. It’s the official start of the summer season, the season of fruit and heat and all that the Sun gives us; the season when its impossible to think so much, and we are called very deeply into our bodies and the earthy, vibrating present. Then right in its wake, on Friday evening at 6:07pm PST, the moon peaks in fullness at 1° of Capricorn, the holy sea goat. Whenever a solstice meets with a new or full moon, it heightens the potency of the threshold - in this case, a current of manifestation coming to its fullest expression, and becoming a current of liberation. The inhale is becomeing the exhale, the expansion a contraction. It’s a big finish is what it is, and the start of a new phase. Capricorn is cardinal, initiating earth. Its gift is for creating lasting material abundance, and its creations take time. Ruled by Saturn, Capricorn is big on duty, responsibility, and doing the work. It’s like, be an adult, mind your blood sugar, focus on the practical steps before you; be patient, be dogged, be devoted. Its higher teachings are about the joy that comes from accepting the difficulties of life. The Moon finds it a little hard to be in Capricorn, preferring the soft, protective waters of Cancer. Full moons here tend to exaggerate tensions between our personal needs and inner/emotional life, and our outer world work. Have we been prioritizing one over the other? How has that been going this cycle? Are we depleted? Energized? These are high holy days, for those of us who honor the natural clockworks as sacred. Its a good time to connect with yourself and connect with the natural world, feel what time it is in your own life, and listen to your inner teacher. Reflect on the mountain you’ve been climbing, the life you’ve been trying to create, the world you’ve been trying to change. What have you given your attention and power to in the last six months? How are you doing? Where do you deserve some witnessing and some high fives? Celebrate any moves you have made, no matter how small, in the direction of your healing and bigger dreams.
